Off The Bench – Interoperative Monitoring

Off the Bench

Seriously guys... We can't all be department chair... Jonte takes an honest look at career paths outside of academia for PhDs.

Jonte Jones @jonte.jones

The Gist

On the inaugural episode of Off the Bench, I interview Raj Byrapureddy - an MD and former PhD student who managed to claw his way from the vice-like, icy grip of academia and find a position as an interoperative neurophysiologist.  As could be expected, the issue of his now baller-status in his new position is discussed in contrast with the abject poverty of grad school,  we briefly touch on the possibility of a Frankenstein's monster of composite data from patients, and being the "Fulfillment of the imposter syndrome" among other things.
Naturally, the topic of stripping is brought up along with abusing the power of his current position for some lucrative, opportunistic live streaming.  Fallen hero James Watson is also mentioned - never meet your heroes.
If worst comes to worst, he can always join the Texan militia once the state FINALLY decides to secede.

Interoperative Monitoring

The technician occupying this position works alongside surgeons and anesthesiologists to both prepare patients for diagnostic processes and monitor neural activity via various imaging techniques during neurosurgical procedures.  Median salary is around $50,000 and often requires special certification.
