SCIENCE DOJO

90 Degree Flash Turn

Science Dojo

Someone Asks a Stupid Question and a group of scientists has 20 min to answer it.

In this episode of Science Dojo we go (provide) full audio for one time only! Joey Bears wants to make a 90 degree turn at Mach 70. We attempt to field this question... Our special guest Amin Abdi MD wonders what he just got himself into. The conversation follows :

Thank you! Here we go!
Hey so Um... I was recently a few episodes of DC TV Shows and decided I wanted the super powers of the flash. So, Let's start things off easy I want to get myself up to Mach 70, but I want to make a 90 degree turn like on the TV show. How can I do that without dying?

theanswer
Dave Pena @dave.pena WOW MACH 70!
To give you an idea of just how fast that is Mach 70 (70 times the speed of sound 767 mph) is around 60 times faster than a bullet zipping out of a rifle. It is 3 times faster than the speed of the former space shuttle relative to the earth.  Here is a random website I found with some factoids about how fast humans have traveled over the course of our history. I feel very confident in saying no person who has ever existed on this planet has ever gone Mach 70 relative to the Earth. There aren't many materials that would not melt in the Earth's atmosphere at that speed so we need to assume that we achieved that speed in the vacuum of space. Going that fast is not really a problem as long as you don't accelerate too fast, the real issue is make a 90 degree turn. Imagine the force you might experience jumping off a building landing on the ground and walking down the street, now multiply that four hundred and forty times and that would be a close approximation to what anyone would experience in a vehicle or otherwise making a 90 degree turn at Mach 70. Our very short attempt at solving this problem follows:
